Where the mountains meet the sea

Nerja’s coast changes character quickly: lively Burriana, small urban coves, the open viewpoint of the Balcón and, farther east, a protected shoreline of cliffs and clear water.

Burriana and central Nerja

Burriana is the useful all-rounder: a broad beach, watersports, showers and a long line of places to eat when seasonal services are operating. From there, climb into town for the lanes around Calle Pintada and the Balcón de Europa.

For a quieter swim, look at smaller town beaches such as Carabeillo or Carabeo, but expect steps and less space.

Nerja Cave

The cave provides a complete change of scale and temperature from the beach. Allow time for the visitor route and, if you enjoy local history, the Nerja Museum in town.

Use the official site for tickets and current access guidance. The cave environment includes steps, uneven surfaces and controlled lighting.

Protected coastlineSea conditions matter

Maro–Cerro Gordo

East of Nerja, steep land falls directly into the Mediterranean. Viewpoints, coves and the water itself reveal different sides of the protected landscape; a guided paddle or dive can be especially rewarding in suitable conditions.

Respect signs, access restrictions, wildlife and marine rules. Parking and beach access may be managed differently in the busiest season.

Coves and mountain paths

Two good ways to leave the urban coast behind: continue east to a beach framed by cliffs, or turn inland into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama.

Cantarriján

This beach sits within the protected coastal landscape near the Granada provincial boundary. Its setting is the attraction; seasonal traffic management and access can make the journey part of the plan.

Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama

The natural park offers a much safer framework for mountain walking than informal river access. Choose an established route that suits the heat, daylight, terrain and experience of your group.

Do not enter Río Chíllar

The access route remains closed under an official Nerja Town Hall notice. Ignore older travel articles that continue to recommend it. Check the official closure notice.

Kayaking, diving and sailing links take you directly to independent providers; cycling and canyoning open up the country behind the coast.
